Announcement of the People’s Bank of China

〔2012〕No.9


The People’s Bank of China is to issue a set of Chinese bronze ware gold and silver commemorative coins(1stissue)on August 31, 2012. The set consists of 5 coins, including two gold coins and three silver coins, all of which are the legal tender of the People’s Republic of China.

I. Design of the coins

 i. Obverse design  

The series of gold and silver commemorative coins bear the common obverse of the emblem of the People’s Republic of China, the title of PRC and the year date.

 ii. Reverse design  

The reverse of 5oz gold coin features a shou mian wen fang ding, a bronze rectangular container from the Shang Dynasty, decorated with animal motifs and used for cooking and storing food. The vessel is set against a background of the decorative design of its animal motifs, with the words “Shang Dynasty, shou mian wen fang ding” in Chinese and the face value.

The reverse of 1/4oz gold coin depicts a ru ding wen jue, a bronze tripod goblet from the Xia Dynasty, decorated with nipple-shaped patterns and used for serving wine. The vessel is set against a background of the decorative design of its nipple-shaped patterns, with the words “Xia Dynasty, ru ding wen jue” in Chinese and the face value.

The reverse of 1kg silver coin features a shou mian wen jia, a bronze tripod goblet from the Shang Dynasty, decorated with animal motifs and used for serving wine. The vessel is set against a background of the decorative design of its animal motifs, with the words “Shang Dynasty, shou mian wen jia” in Chinese and the face value.

The reverse of 5oz silver coin depicts a shou mian wen li, a bronze tripod cauldron from the Shang Dynasty, decorated with animal motifs and used for cooking and storing food. The vessel is set against a background of the decorative design of it animal motifs, with the words “Shang Dynasty, shou mian wen li” in Chinese and the face value.

The reverse of 1oz silver coin features a xian wen he, a bronze tripod cauldron from the Shang Dynasty, decorated with string patterns and used for preparing and serving wine. The vessel is set against a background of the decorative design of its string patterns, with the words “Shang Dynasty, xian wen he” in Chinese and the face value.

II. Specifications and mintage of the coins

i. 5oz gold coin is proof in quality, 60mm in diameter, 2000Yuan in face value, 99.9% in fineness and contains 5 troy ounces of pure gold. The total mintage is 2000 pieces.

ii. 1/4oz gold coin is proof in quality, 22mm in diameter, 100Yuan in face value, 99.9% in fineness and contains 1/4 troy ounce of pure gold. The total mintage is 50000 pieces.

iii. 1kg silver coin is proof in quality, 100mm in diameter, 300Yuan in face value, 99.9% in fineness and contains 5 troy ounces of pure silver. The total mintage is 6000 pieces.

iv. 5oz silver coin is proof in quality, 70mm in diameter, 50Yuan in face value, 99.9% in fineness and contains 5 troy ounces of pure silver. The total mintage is 10000 pieces.

v.  1oz silver coin is proof in quality, 40mm in diameter, 10Yuan in face value, 99.9% in fineness and contains 1 troy ounce of pure gold. The total mintage is 80000 pieces.

III. The set of gold and silver coin is minted by Shenzhen Guobao Mint Co., Ltd, Shenyang Mint Co., Ltd and Shanghai Mint Co., Ltd respectively, and solely distributed by China Gold Coin Incorporation.
